CHAPTER NINE
* * *
CHRIS SHOVED HIS HANDS INTO THE POCKETS OF HIS JEANS and looked down at his little sister as she stood in the doorway, her mouth agape. He shouldn’t blame her for being surprised; he had almost decided not to come. He still wasn’t sure why he was here, other than he had to see his mother one last time before he went back to Apple Creek. He wished he could see his father, too, but judging from the way his daed had reacted the last time they were together, he knew that was impossible.
Sarah Lynne finally spoke. “You came.”
He nodded, glancing away for a moment. He’d spent the first twenty years of his life here, playing on this front porch, learning how to break and ride a horse, helping his father and mother raise a garden and take care of the house and land. Yet never had he felt more like an outsider than he did at this moment.
He looked back at Sarah Lynne. “Can I come inside?”
She nodded and stepped away so he could walk in. As he strode into the living room, a mix of bittersweet memories flooded him. Everything was the same, including the way the old, plain furniture was arranged.
Then he saw Ellie Chupp sitting on the couch, reaching for her cane as she moved to stand. He started toward her. “How’s that ankle?”
“Better, danki. I only twisted it.” She lifted her face in his direction.
He stood there for a moment, an unfamiliar warm sensation spreading through his stomach as he looked at her. She was the last person he’d expected to see here, but for some reason her presence comforted him. “I didn’t see another buggy outside. I hope you didn’t walk here.”
She shook her head. “My daed dropped me off.”
At the sound of his sister clearing her throat, he turned around. She had an odd look on her face, a blend of surprise and bewilderment.
“What?”
“Ellie brought something for you.” Sarah Lynne went to the easy chair near the couch and picked up a small basket. But instead of handing it to him, she put it in Ellie’s hand. “I’ll geh get Mamm,” she said, hurrying out of the room.
Chris scratched his head. “What’s wrong with her?”
Ellie shrugged, but the way she tilted her head away from him he knew something was up. “Ellie, what happened? Why is my sister acting strangely?”
Ellie hesitated. “She’s upset, Chris. I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but yesterday Isaiah tried to call off the wedding.”
Chris’s brows lifted. “He did? Why would he do that?”
“I don’t know. Maybe because he doesn’t want Sarah Lynne to be unhappy?”
“That’s a weird way to show it. Anyone can see she’s crazy about him. Unless he’s just stringing her along. I wouldn’t put it past him.”
“Stop.”
He snapped his mouth shut at Ellie’s exclamation. Her light blonde brows pinched together, strain showing around her mouth. Even the color of her eyes had darkened with anger.
“Isaiah would never ruin Sarah Lynne’s life. He
